Facts:

The Florida Key's bridges started as a number of railroad bridges completed in 1912.

 After the Labor day hurricane in 1935 destroyed many of the railroad bridges a decision was made to rebuild the bridges as automobile bridges. 

The highway was completed in 1938 as an extension of United States Highway no. 1, which runs from Maine to Key West.
