Aphorisms

During his life my father had a lot of interests that occupied his
mind. One of his main concerns was
proper language and the importance to express a feeling or an opinion in
a simple and easy understandable language. The ability to do that, and
in the same sentence also include hidden understatements and words of
wisdom is almost forgotten these days. As the introduction of technical
equipment like radios, TV and movies has taken place, the quality and
amount of oral
communication between people has declined. A result of this is that the art of managing
ones language is no longer attended to, or valued, in the same way as one could
experience some decades ago. In fact my impression is that fewer people
today have the capability to comprehend understatements as well as
execute eminent use of their own language. If you want proof of this you
can seek out your local museum or library and ask to read letters or
newspapers from the past and compare them with today’s often valueless
garbage.
An aphorism is an abstract word of wisdom or/and a
topic expressed in a few words. An aphorism shall be short and juicy.
My father loved aphorisms and the aphorisms behind the
black links at the left has been written and collected by him.
Unfortunately they are only available in Danish and I will not translate
them to any other language. The aphorisms has been compiled between 1960
and 1984 and was published by my fathers own publisher,
Nordisk Bokforlag. The compilation also contains a speech my father gave
to the Danish master of aphorisms, Soya, at his 80. birthday.
